Historical Places of Bangladesh: part 1



Martyred Intellectual Memorial: Located at Rayerbazar on the bank of Burigonga, the memorial was built to commemorate the intellectuals who were killed in 1971 by the Pakistan's occupation forces just a few days ahead of the Victory Day. It is also known as rayerbazar Buddhijibi sritishoudho.

Natore - Dighapatiya Rajbari (Palace): It is an old seat of the Maharajah of Dighapatiya, now serving as the Uttara Ganabhaban (The Official northern region residence of the President of the Republic). The palace has large, spacious grounds and is surrounded by a fine fort. The palace has well-equipped guest-house and a fine garden decorated with statues of white marble.

Paharpur: It is treated as the Largest Buddhist Seat of Learning of South Asia. It is a small village in the greater Rajshahi district, where it remains of the most important and the largest known monastery south of the Himalayas has been excavated.

Shilaidaha Kuthibari, Kushtia: It is located 20 km. distance from Kustia town. The beautiful mansion carries memory of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). He made frequent visit to this place and used to stay here to serve for administration of his Zamindari and enriched Bengali literature through his writings during that time.

Shahjadpur Kuthibari, Pabna: About 75 km. away from Pabna town. It is a historical place connected with the frequent visits of poet Rabindranath Tagore.
Sagardari, Jessore: The birth place of the celebrated poet Michel Modhusudan Dutta who is called as the first modern poet of Bengali Literature.

Shat gombuj(Sixty domed) mosque: Among the many surviving monuments of the Khan Jahan Ali, undoubtedly the most magnificent and largest brick mosque in Bangladesh is the  Shait Gombuj . It is situated in Bagerhat district and may be build in 15th century. For outstanding architectural value, the World Heritage Committee inscribed it in the World Heritage list and it got the status of the second World Heritage site in Bangladesh after Paharpur.  Its name, meaning '60 domes', is misleading as in reality, it is roofed over with 77 small domes supported by a forest of slender columns covering a large prayer hall.

Mainamati Lalmai ridge:  About 8 km to the west of Comilla town, lies a range of low hills known as the Mainamati-Lalmai ridge, which was an extensive centre of Buddhist culture. On the slopes there lie scattered a treasure of information about the early Buddhist civilization (7th-12th Century AD).  It has revealed valuable information about the rule of the Chandra and Deva dynasties which Flourished here.

Mahasthangar: It is considered as the oldest archaeological site of the county and located at a distance of 18 km north from Bogra town, on the western bank of the Karatoa river. The spectacular site is an imposing landmark in the area with a long fortified enclosure.
